2000 MX-5 (a.k.a the "Mk 2.5")

The MX-5 received some modifications for the U.S. 2000 model year :

  • Slightly more power from the S-VT variable valve timing engine, but only on the 1.8 litre unit, and not really noticeable. Litigious Americans went after Mazda in the states because the advertised performance hike was pretty illusory. The 1.6 litre engine appears to be unchanged.
  • More model variants, including RS "performance" models in the States, though sadly not here in the U.K.
  • Multi-element headlights in low-profile units.
  • Greater body rigidity.
  • U.S. RS models get 205 tyres on 16 inch wheels and Bilstein suspension.
  • New upgradable component stereo.
  • Keyless entry system.
  • Modified cup holders - whoopee - and removable ashtray.
  • More supportive seats (about bloody time too).
  • White dials with chrome trim, like the Icon.
  • Better door trim, i.e. not quite so cheap and nasty.
Notice the new front airdam and the lower profile compound headlights.

Nice colour too. Judging by the size of the wheels, I think we're looking at an RS model here.

I could rather fancy a red RS-II with the two tone red/black interior.... Maybe one day. Or maybe I'll just get a second-hand Boxster instead. Decision, decisions.
