Lewis Pneumatic Lumbar Support

The seats in the MX5 are legendarily bad if you have lumbar problems. The cheapo approach to this problem is to roll up a small towel or scarf and insert it behind the seat cushion (which can be pulled away from the seat back quite easily, even if you have the factory leather option - but see below for details on the Mk 2.5 cars). For more adjustability, I got a Lewis Lumbar support from the USA.

I cannot recommend this product highly enough. If you have back problems when driving the MX5 for any length of time, just get a Lewis. End of problem.

By the way, the trick to adjusting a Lewis is simple - pump it up until you can feel it pressing into your back, then dab the button once to release a little air. Once it's adjusted the only way you'll know it's there is because your back has stopped hurting.

Note that the Mk 2.5 cars now available have different seats with more lumbar support. This is a good job, because the seat back is now fully stitched in, so if you can't cope with the design, you don't have the option of a Lewis. My advice ? Take a l-o-n-g test drive.
